Dividing Property in a Pasadena Divorce

California is a community property state, which means that any two parties in a marriage or domestic partnership are understood to be a “community.” We know that this can be confusing if you are considering a separation or a divorce, and we can help. Generally speaking, most property acquired by either spouse after the date of the marriage will be classified as community property, or property of the community. There are some exceptions, such as property expressly excluded in a premarital agreement, or acquired through a gift or inheritance.

Domestic Partnerships and Cohabitation Agreements

We regularly assist with domestic partnership agreements, as well as prenuptial and cohabitation agreements. California’s Domestic Partnership Act provides a variety of protections, but it is important to understand how and when it applies. If you are planning to enter into a domestic partnership or a marriage, consider the ways in which a prenuptial agreement or a cohabitation agreement may be able to benefit you in the long run. We are committed to providing our clients with a tailored and nuanced approach to these agreements in order to protect their best interests.
